Museum Continues to Capture Old West Spirit

The Boot Hill Museum was founded in 1947. The museum has had quite an evolution; starting as a souvenir shop and transforming into a high caliber museum. The museum houses over 30,000 local artifacts and you can step back in time as you tour the buildings and view the exhibits.

The museum is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. The remainder of the year it is open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Saturday and from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sundays. Boot Hill Museum is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. If you are a Ford County resident the museum is free to you with ID.

Summertime activities include the High Noon and 7:00 pm gunfights, can-can lessons, deputizing of the kids, a delicious country-style dinner and the Long Branch Variety Show, one of the longest running shows in the Nation.

The Museum’s entrance is host to a 2,000 square foot gift shop with many unique and western themed items. Its extensive inventory includes everything from post cards, tee shirts and glassware to jewelry, books and home decorator items. Hard to find western themed toys and adorable gifts for new little cowboys and girls are a few of the specialty items in the store. The store also specializes in Dodge City branded items including small versions of the Dodge City silhouette signs, Dodge City bling travel mugs and ball caps, playing cards, and many Get-the-H*#@-Out of Dodge items.

The Rath General Store also provides a unique shopping experience with a large variety of merchandise reminiscent of general stores in early Dodge City. It offers replica items such as prairie bonnets, long handled underwear, canned goods, hats, walking sticks, Dutch ovens, nostalgic candy and fresh cream and butter fudge. The General Store is located inside the museum complex but is still accessible for local residents to shop without the purchase of a museum ticket.

Boot Hill Museum, Inc. is a 501(c)3 charitable organization so purchases made in the Museum stores help support the organization’s mission of preserving Dodge City’s colorful history. Boot Hill Museum is an educational and historical institution with just enough fun added for the entire family to enjoy!
